Simulation of Inland excess water (North-Eastern Hungary)


Inland excess water is the specific hydrological extremity of lowland agricultural areas, which one were typically wetlands and then turned into cropland by drainage and river regulation. The phenomenon is peculiarly common in the Carpathian basin. Excess water appears as surface water coverage and/or nearly saturated soils in large areas and for prolonged periods of time. Directly snowmelt and precipitation causes it, but unfavorable hydrologic conditions also contribute (lack of surface runoff, shallow groundwater level, inhibited infiltration as a result of natural soil properties and anthropogenic effects).
The process based simulation allows one to study inland excess water under present and possible future conditions.
